New Playground in Mission Bay
This amazing new playground opened on November 19, 2022! It has spinners, slides (including a roller slide – which I love!), a tot lot for littles, rope climbing, other climbing structures, some shade and lots of other fun stuff!
This playground has saddle swings, baby swings, ADA swings and a group swing! That’s a lot of swings! Sorry about the not-great pic… I’ll try to update soon!
These cute egg chairs look so fun! I can’t wait for my daughter to check them out (and I’ll report back)!
Restrooms
There is NOT a restroom facility at Tecolote Shores North, but there is one at Tecolote Shores SOUTH (which is nearby). Part of the improvements included an ADA-compliant pathway with security lighting that connects Tecolote Shores North and Tecolote Shores South.
Picnic Tables
If you want to have a party or other event, you’ll find a shaded gazebo between the playground and the adult fitness area. It has four rectangle tables. To get a permit, the City of San Diego website says to contact 619-235-1169 for fee information
Adult Fitness Area
Okay, this is one of the coolest adult fitness areas I’ve seen! In addition to being RIGHT ON THE BAY (with equipment facing the water), it’s basically a playground for adults. It has cardio, body weight and stretching equipment. It also has a slacklining area (which is a new tag for my park database!).
Picnic Areas
In addition to the shaded picnic area by the playground, there are other picnic tables around the park.
Alcohol Policy at Tecolote Shores North
Alcohol is NOT allowed at Tecolote Shores North and South, per San Diego Municipal Code. Please keep in mind that glass is never allowed at any park, for safety.
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
On November 19, 2022, Mayor Todd Gloria and City Councilmember Jennifer Campbell joined San Diegans to celebrate the reopening of Tecolote Shores North in Mission Bay, a popular playground for locals and visitors. This portion of a larger project to renovate several facilities along Mission Bay includes improvements to the playground, comfort station and parking lot.
“These improvements in the Tecolote Shores area of Mission Bay Park are emblematic of our efforts to get things done for San Diego residents and, in this case, our visitors, too,” said Mayor Todd Gloria. “I was thrilled to cut the ribbon today and I’m proud to know that folks from all over the world will be enjoying these amenities for many years to come.”
The $3.8 million park features upgraded play equipment to provide access for all users, an adult fitness course, shade structures, improved landscaping and irrigation. Other renovations to the site include a retrofitted comfort station, parking lot improvements and an ADA-compliant pathway with security lighting that connects Tecolote Shores North and Tecolote Shores South.
“I am incredibly grateful to have this upgraded facility in Mission Bay,” said Councilmember Jennifer Campbell, who represents District 2. “This beautiful new area means residents can enjoy the outdoors by taking a stroll or playing on the playground. I want to thank Mayor Gloria for his interest in ensuring people have outdoor spaces like these to enjoy, as well as the Engineering and Capital Projects and Parks and Recreation departments for creating this wonderful space.”
Phase 2 - Tecolote Shores South
The opening of Tecolote Shores North completes Phase 1 of the City’s Tecolote Park Improvements project. Phase 1 included Tecolote Shores North and the De Anza Cove adult fitness course, which opened in May. Phase 2 includes upgrades to Tecolote Shores South. That work is expected to begin in the coming weeks and be completed in May 2023. The total cost for Phases 1 and 2 is $8.38 million. This project is paid for through the Mission Bay Park Improvement Fund.
I was the designer for the play equipment in this park, and I’m overjoyed that people are enjoying it! I can’t wait for you all to see what’s in store for the South Park area!
