Kellogg Park Playground
I will NEVER get over a playground where you can see the ocean while you swing! This playground is ocean-themed, with slides, sand (of course), swings, monkey bars, a small zipline, and a bronze play sculpture of a whale (JJ!).

The theme of this playground is on point. I love the different play panels!

If you’re pushing in your kid in the swing for an hour, might as well have a view of the ocean (the beach is just behind me in this picture)!! The swing set here includes 2 baby (bucket) swings and 4 regular (saddle) swings.

A bronze sculpture of J.J., an orphaned baby gray whale rescued by SeaWorld in 1997. It’s under a shade structure and is a classic San Diego photo op!
Restrooms
Kellogg park has a restroom building near the playground with ten gender-neutral stalls. Three of the stalls wheelchair accessible and at least one (maybe two?) is a family restroom! Outside the bathroom stalls, there are two drinking fountains.

Grand Canyons of La Jolla Educational Plaza
Kellogg Park at La Jolla Shores has a beautiful and educational tile mosaic. It’s located between the playground and the restrooms. According to the La Jolla Light:
Hundreds of thousands of mosaic tiles embedded in the ground make up a 2,200-square-foot LithoMosaic containing more than 100 life-size mosaics of creatures found just offshore, as well as markers of significant underwater canyons and varying shades of blue to mark ocean depths.
Information panels include photos of the species found in “The Map” and QR codes to scan for more details.
It is an incredible installation! You can read all about the process to build it (called LithoMosaic) in the article.
Picnic Area
La Jolla Shores has a beautiful picnic area, right near the beach, and in close proximity to the playground and the restrooms. It’s a large grassy area with some picnic tables. Unfortunately, I didn’t get too many pictures of it… I’ll take more the next time I visit! Scroll to the end of the post to see a map of Kellogg Park so you can get a sense of where everything is.
